Mozambique is amongst the 20 poorest countries in the world, ranking 172th in the human development index in 2007. Mozambique also suffers from an unemployment rate of 22.1% (World Bank, 2008). 70% of the population lives under the poverty line (CIA factbook, 2000).
However Mozambique is also rich in minerals and has a large agricultural sector which dominates 83% of the labor force and until recently 80% of country exports (Foreign and Commonwealth Office, 2009). Agriculture along with infrastructure still suffers from neglect from colonial days and need investments to nurture growth in these predominant sectors.
